Mac DVD Backup Guide

Created: 5/29/06

This is my first ever mac related guide.  Since acquiring an older Mac G4 Tower from a pal and upgrading dvd burners in my main HTPC; i decided to see how using my G4 to do movie backups worked and thought i'd make a guide at the same time!  Yes, i know there prob are numerous guides out there, but with my method you only have to use 2 applications to do the full backup! Another sidenote, some movies w/mulitple angles will require you to make a compressed backup of the whole disc (including menus, will prompt in Toast).  This guide will cover that since doing movie only backups is the same technique but one different option in Toast.  Also, the full process is quite a bit longer than on my normal XP machine but thats ok since its my backup/internet surfing pc; but expect about an hour to do a backup w/an older G4, 400mhz cpu.  Of course newer macs will do this in prob under 30 mins w/compressing.

NOTE: this guide will be using commercial software such as Toast 7 Titanium.

Required Software/Hardware:

  • Mac w/dvd burner (using my nec nd-1300a 4x dvd-+/rw)
  • OS X Tiger and Mac :P
  • Toast 7 Titanium
  • MacTheRipper v2.6.6 (Get mactheripper v2.6.6!)

Step 1. Install MacTheRipper and Toast.

Step 2. Setup a temp folder to rip to.

Step 3. Put in Movie, then launch MacTheRipper.  MacTheRipper is a Mac equivalent of DVD Decrypter for the PC.

File > Save To to change to our temp folder we setup. Then choose your mode.

Full Movie w/menus: choose to do a Disc mode.

OR

Movie Only no menus: choose Mode > Title Set Extraction then choose the title (the title 01 is usually the English, main title for most movies) and then hit Go.

This process might take about 10-15mins  (depending on your mac).

Once your done, you'll get the nice Done screen.

Step 4. Using Toast 7 Titanium to compress/burn movie to DVD.

Open up Toast 7 TItanium.  Click on the Video Tab and then choose DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS.

Now press the Select button and find the folder we just ripped to.

Now you should have a few more options.  Depending on if you ripped the whole movie w/menus or just the movie, your options will change.  Toast will compress the movie if its over 4.36GB in size.  So far the compression is equivalent to DVD2one's on the PC side.   Here are a few of the options you can set.

or if you change to Main Movie only, you can select the audio streams and more.

Pop in a blank DVD and click the burn button.  This might take some time depending on if your movie has to be compressed or not; some movies will be a 1:1 video backup while longer ones may be compressed.

Hopefully once it finishes compressing and burning, your movie will mount and play on your mac!

That concludes my first Mac DVD Backup guide.  Email me w/questions or comments.

NOTES:

-if you have probs w/the video not encoding w/toast, just rip the whole dvd each time if you have the extra hd space; that way you can choose to have Toast remove the menus or if you want to keep them.
